Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has been awarded the “Prince of Cilicia” order by Catholicos Aram I during an official ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, underscoring strong relations between Cyprus and Armenia.
The honour was conferred by Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church, who praised both Cyprus and the President for their “bridging role” in a region marked by ongoing conflicts.
Cyprus praised as a regional bridge
During the meeting, Aram I emphasised that Cyprus occupies a sensitive geopolitical position and is directly affected by developments in the wider Middle East and beyond.
He said that in an interconnected global environment, conflicts such as those in Ukraine, Syria, Lebanon and Iran have wider international repercussions.
He stressed that Cyprus must continue playing a “bridging role” in regional diplomacy, praising Christodoulides for his engagement with Armenia and Lebanon.
Strong Cyprus–Armenia historical ties
The Catholicos also referred to the long-standing historical and cultural ties between Cyprus and Armenia, including shared traditions, church relations and common experiences.
He highlighted the Armenian community in Cyprus, noting its appreciation for the rights and privileges it enjoys on the island.
Aram I said the award was a gesture of gratitude towards the Cypriot state and people for their long-standing support of Armenians.
Presidential response highlights cooperation
Christodoulides accepted the honour on behalf of the government and the people of Cyprus, describing the relationship between Cyprus, Armenia and Lebanon as historically strong.
He reaffirmed Cyprus’ commitment to regional stability and its close cooperation with Lebanon, as well as continued support for Armenia at EU level.
The President also referred to Cyprus’ response to the 2020 Beirut port explosion, recalling the strong sense of proximity between the two countries.
He noted that Cyprus has consistently supported closer EU–Lebanon relations and praised Armenia’s progress and development in recent years.
Commitment to Armenian community in Cyprus
Christodoulides expressed pride in the Armenian community in Cyprus, describing it as an integral part of the island’s cultural fabric.
He added that any honorary distinction carries responsibility, pledging continued efforts to justify the trust placed in him through strengthened diplomatic and humanitarian engagement.
