A new quantity of opioid drugs with a total gross weight of eight kilograms was discovered in Limassol following the collection and evaluation of information, with a 30-year-old man arrested to assist investigations.
Members of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (ΥΚΑΝ) carried out checks on a suspicious package located at a courier company in Limassol on Sunday. During the search, officers found 40 nylon packages containing dried poppy pods from the Papaver somniferum plant, with a total gross weight of eight kilograms.
The 30-year-old was arrested under a court warrant and taken into custody. He is expected to appear before the Limassol District Court today for proceedings related to a detention order request.
Additional seizure in Nicosia
Meanwhile, another quantity of opioid drugs with a gross weight of one kilogram was also located and seized by ΥΚΑΝ, which proceeded with the arrest of a 35-year-old man already in custody in connection with a separate drug-related case.
Authorities said the latest quantity, consisting of dried poppy pods from the Papaver somniferum species, was discovered on 22 June 2026 in a postal package delivered to a courier company’s premises in the Nicosia district.
The 35-year-old had been listed as the package recipient and was arrested under a court warrant.
Ongoing investigations continue
The suspect had already been in custody since 19 June as part of an investigation into drug trafficking involving the seizure of more than 10 kilograms of opioid drugs. A 31-year-old woman also remains in custody in relation to the same case.
The Drug Law Enforcement Unit’s Nicosia branch continues its investigations.
