Switzerland announces technical phase of Iran-US talks

Date:

Switzerland announced the immediate launch of technical discussions between Iran and the United States, a day after high-level delegations from both countries met in efforts to end the conflict in the Middle East.

In a statement, the Swiss Foreign Ministry welcomed what it described as an agreement on a roadmap aimed at reaching a final deal within 60 days. According to the ministry, the roadmap creates the conditions needed for the immediate start of a new round of technical discussions.

Delegations leave for closed-door talks

The two delegations, led by US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf respectively, have departed Switzerland to allow the technical phase of discussions to begin.

The closed-door meetings are expected to continue throughout the week at the Burgenstock resort complex in the Swiss Alps.

Regional support for roadmap

During the night, the governments of Pakistan and Qatar issued a joint statement confirming that both sides had agreed on a roadmap designed to achieve a final agreement within 60 days, laying the foundation for immediate technical discussions.

Iran also signalled optimism over the progress of negotiations. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the outcome as “significant progress”, while the United States has not yet officially commented on the latest developments.

Switzerland offers diplomatic support

Bern said it remains ready to support the process in line with its longstanding tradition of offering diplomatic mediation and good offices.

“Our goal is for our diplomacy to contribute meaningfully to de-escalation, stability and peace,” the Swiss Foreign Ministry said.
