The National Council of Cyprus convened at around 10:00 am on Monday under President Nicos Christodoulides, marking the first meeting of the body in its new composition following the May parliamentary elections.
The session takes place with revised political representation, reflecting changes in the House of Representatives after the recent vote.
New parties join Council for first time
For the first time, the meeting includes participation from the ALMA–Citizens for Cyprus movement and the Direct Democracy party, represented by Odysseas Michaelides and Fidias Panayiotou respectively.
Former President Nicos Anastasiades informed the Council that he would not be attending the session.
Political leaders attend meeting
The Cyprus National Council session includes leaders of parliamentary parties: DISY President Annita Demetriou, AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou, ELAM President Christos Christou, and DIKO President Nicolas Papadopoulos.
Also participating are ALMA leader Odysseas Michaelides and Direct Democracy leader Fidias Panayiotou.
Government officials and advisers present
Government representation includes Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Deputy Government Spokesperson Yiannis Antoniou, and Cyprus’ negotiator Menelaos Menelaou.
Also attending are National Security Adviser and KYP chief Tasos Tzionis, Director of the President’s Diplomatic Office Doros Venezis, and Press Office Director Viktor Papadopoulos.
Focus on Cyprus issue expected
The Council is expected to be briefed on current developments regarding the Cyprus issue, in what is the first high-level political consultation since the new political landscape was formed.
The meeting marks a significant moment for coordination between political leadership and the government on national issues.
