The National Council is meeting today at 10am under President Nicos Christodoulides to receive updates on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue following the recent visit to Cyprus by the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín.
The National Council meeting comes at what the President has previously described as a critical period for developments surrounding the Cyprus issue.
Party leaders invited to attend meeting
Speaking on 12 June after his meeting with Holguín, President Christodoulides said the current period represents a crucial moment for efforts related to Cyprus talks.
He added that all leaders of political parties represented in the House of Representatives had been invited to attend the National Council session. At the same time, he said he would continue briefing leaders of parties no longer represented in parliament but which had previously participated in the National Council.
The President described the coming weeks before Holguín’s return to Cyprus as being of “decisive importance”.
Focus on expanded meeting initiative
President Christodoulides expressed hope that internal unity would emerge around the goal of convening an expanded meeting on the Cyprus issue.
He also reiterated his optimism that efforts would achieve the objective of holding an expanded meeting that could ultimately lead to the resumption of negotiations.
The National Council discussions are expected to focus on the next steps and the broader diplomatic process surrounding renewed efforts on Cyprus talks.
Holguín continues regional contacts
Following her visit to Cyprus, Holguín held meetings in Turkey and Greece with the foreign ministers of both countries.
She is expected to return to Cyprus in the coming weeks after visiting Brussels.
