A drug seizure in Nicosia led police to uncover a new quantity of opioid-related narcotics with a total gross weight of 10 kilograms following intelligence gathering and evaluation of information.
Members of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN) carried out a search at the residence of a 35-year-old man in Nicosia yesterday. Officers discovered 54 airtight packages containing dried seed pods of the opium poppy plant (Papaver somniferum), with a total gross weight of 10 kilograms.
The 35-year-old was arrested for an offence committed in the act.
Additional quantities found during further investigations
Further searches later uncovered two additional nylon bags containing dried opium poppy pods with a total gross weight of 100 grams.
Authorities also found a quantity of beige powder weighing a total of 15 grams.
The drug seizure follows an earlier case involving the first reported large-scale importation of poppy products into Cyprus.
Suspect also found residing illegally
Police also established that the 35-year-old had been residing illegally in the Republic of Cyprus since April 2022.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Nicosia District Court today for proceedings related to the issuance of a remand order.
YKAN continues its investigations.
