Suspect allegedly confesses to abduction and murder

Police in Cyprus are investigating a premeditated murder case after the body of a man was discovered in an open area in Larnaca district during inquiries into the abduction of a 22-year-old student.

According to police, a 22-year-old suspect was arrested on Sunday, June 21, following intelligence gathered during the investigation into the disappearance of Shahruar Ahmed Emon, a 22-year-old from Bangladesh.

During questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted involvement in both the abduction and the murder of the victim. Police said he then led investigators to a location in Larnaca district where a man’s body, believed to be that of the missing student, was found in an advanced state of decomposition.

Knife recovered at the scene

Investigators also recovered a knife at the scene, which the suspect allegedly identified as the murder weapon.

The area was sealed off while forensic experts and a medical examiner carried out examinations. Initial findings indicated that the body bore injuries consistent with a sharp object.

Police also found personal belongings belonging to the victim, along with other evidence indicating that the body is that of the abducted 22-year-old.

The suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear before Larnaca District Court today for the issuance of a detention order.

Ransom demand followed disappearance

The abduction was reported to police at around 1am on June 12 by the victim’s roommate.

According to the complaint, the 22-year-old had left their home on the afternoon of June 11 to travel to a factory where he was due to begin work.

Later that evening, the victim’s father, who lives abroad, received a phone call and text messages from an unknown individual demanding money in exchange for his son’s release.

The Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is continuing its investigations.
