A total of 2.1 kilograms of opioid-related narcotic material was discovered in Limassol following an operation carried out by the Cyprus Drug Law Enforcement Unit (ΥΚΑΝ).
According to police, officers acting on intelligence located a 23-year-old man walking on a street in Limassol on Tuesday afternoon. A search of his bag revealed two nylon packages containing dried pods of the opium poppy plant (Papaver somniferum), with a total gross weight of 418 grams. The 23-year-old was arrested for a flagrant offence.
A subsequent search of his residence led officers to a 21-year-old man who was also present at the property. During the search, police found a cardboard box containing eight nylon packages filled with dried opium poppy pods weighing a total of 1.682 kilograms. The 21-year-old was also arrested on the spot.
Various other items were seized as evidence during the operation.
Both suspects were later re-arrested under court warrants and remanded in custody. The Limassol District Court subsequently issued eight-day detention orders as investigations by ΥΚΑΝ continue.
