Beach set prices in Cyprus have increased, with the maximum fee for two sunbeds and an umbrella set at €10, according to the President of the Central Beaches Committee and Mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Zannetou.
He told the Cyprus News Agency that citizens had been paying €7.50 for around 20 years and that the new €10 rate represents the upper limit set by the Committee, which municipalities may choose to apply.
Municipalities apply new pricing
Zannetou said several municipalities have already implemented the €10 charge for beach sets this year.
He added that, compared with other tourist destinations, Cyprus remains competitive, as the cost of the service is still below 50% of what is charged elsewhere.
Free beach zones remain available
Referring to free access areas in front of organised beaches, he stressed that these zones are available to all citizens who wish to use their own equipment.
He also said that no one is obliged to rent a full set and that local authorities must serve visitors according to their preference, including offering single items such as one sunbed.
Complaints and enforcement
Zannetou noted that no official complaints have been received so far regarding refusals to rent individual sunbeds or umbrellas.
However, he said he will call on local authorities to ensure proper service and warned that any refusal to provide individual rental options could create unpleasant situations.
He added that the Committee will investigate any complaints submitted and issue instructions where necessary.
Checks and tourism impact
The Beaches Committee confirmed that inspections are carried out to ensure compliance with pricing rules, but said checks are currently limited due to lower tourist traffic, which he estimated to be around 30% below seasonal levels.
He added that enforcement would be more effective once visitor numbers increase.
No further price hikes expected
Zannetou said he does not expect any further increases in beach set prices during his term, provided tourism performance remains stable.
He also highlighted ongoing investments by municipalities in beach infrastructure and services, noting that Ayia Napa has invested more than €2 million in recent years to upgrade facilities.
