A photographer from Agence France-Presse (AFP) injured in Lebanon, Christina Assi, French rape survivor Gisèle Pelicot, and American actress Sharon Stone are among the 100 Women of the Year, according to the BBC’s annual list published today.
Recognising women who drive change
The list, divided into five categories—Climate, Culture and Education, Entertainment and Sport, Politics, and Science, Health, and Technology—aims to spotlight women who, “through their resilience, drive change,” the British outlet noted.
Christina Assi: Advocating for journalists’ safety
Christina Assi, a photographer who lost her right leg following an Israeli strike in Lebanon, in October 2023, while reporting, was recognised in the Politics category.
BBC wrote that this experience led her to campaign for journalist safety, and she dedicated her participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Torch Relay to all journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Speaking to AFP, Assi expressed that her inclusion on the list wasan incredible honour, particularly as a female photographer in a field often dominated by men. She added that this recognition is a tribute to all the brave journalists who have been targeted simply for doing their jobs.
She also hoped the recognition would highlight the importance of press freedom and the sacrifices made to uphold it.
Gisèle Pelicot: A global symbol of courage
French rape survivor Gisèle Pelicot was also recognised in the Politics category. Pelicot has become a symbol for rape victims worldwide after enduring a decade of drug-induced assaults by her husband and other men he invited. Her case, which culminated in an extraordinary trial with international attention this autumn, has brought global awareness to the issue.
According to BBC, by forgoing her right to anonymity and allowing her story to be shared globally, Gisèle Pelicot became a symbol of courage and resilience.
Other notable names on the list
In the UK, Angela Rayner, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, and Kemi Badenoch, Leader of the Opposition, were also recognised in the Politics category.
In the Culture category, Sharon Stone, the unforgettable star of Basic Instinct, was honoured for her lifetime achievements. British singer Raye, 2023’s breakout music star, also featured on the list.
In Sport, Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade, a six-time Olympic medallist with two golds, was celebrated for her ability to overcome numerous serious injuries.

The BBC’s 100 Women list continues to honour those who inspire and drive change across the globe, recognising their contributions to society, courage in adversity, and the impact they have in shaping a better future.
