The implementation of the European Union Migration and Asylum Pact marks a significant milestone for the bloc and its collective approach to migration challenges, Cyprus said on Friday.
Cyprus’ Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, Nikolas Ioannidis, made the remarks while opening an informal ministerial meeting held in Nicosia under the country’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
“New chapter” for EU migration policy
Speaking at the opening of the session, Ioannidis described the launch of the pact’s implementation as a key moment in European migration policy, stressing that it follows years of negotiations among member states and EU institutions.
He said the agreement reflects a shared commitment to build a more coherent and resilient framework for managing migration and asylum across Europe.
Shared responsibility and solidarity
Ioannidis underlined that effective migration management requires common responsibility, mutual trust and solidarity among EU member states.
He added that the success of the new framework will depend on consistent implementation and continued cooperation at the European level.
According to him, the pact represents not just legislation, but a broader shift towards joint action on a complex issue that no country can address alone.
Cyprus role in EU coordination
The ministerial meeting forms part of Cyprus’ role in advancing EU-level discussions on migration policy during its Presidency of the Council.
Officials said the implementation phase opens a “new path” of shared responsibility and coordinated action across member states, aimed at strengthening Europe’s overall migration system.
