Party leaders meet at House of Representatives
The first meeting of party leaders and representatives in the new House of Representatives will take place today at 12:00 noon under the chairmanship of House Speaker Annita Demetriou.
The meeting marks the start of preparations for the new parliamentary term, just days after the formation of the new legislature and Demetriou’s re-election as Speaker.
Committee formation on agenda
The focus of the meeting is expected to be the procedural steps required for the operation of the new House, as well as preparations for the establishment of parliamentary committees.
A key issue will be the formation of the Selection Committee, ahead of its election during next Thursday’s plenary session.
The committee will play a central role in determining the allocation of parliamentary committee chairmanships.
Disagreements emerge over committee posts
The distribution of committee chairmanships has already sparked political debate among the parties.
Parties with parliamentary groups of at least eight MPs argue that, based on House regulations and constitutional provisions, committee chairmanships should primarily be allocated among them.
Meanwhile, smaller parties represented by four MPs have pointed to precedents from previous parliamentary terms, during which committee chairmanships were also assigned to parties without formal parliamentary groups.
Parties to present initial positions
The meeting will be held at the House of Representatives, with parties expected to outline their initial positions regarding the allocation of parliamentary posts and the smooth commencement of the new legislative session.
