Demetriou re-elected for second term
DISY leader Annita Demetriou has been re-elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives after securing victory in the second round of the House Speaker vote with 29 votes.
Demetriou received the 17 votes of DISY, eight from DIKO and four from the Direct Democracy, giving her a second consecutive term as Speaker.
Stephanou finishes second
Her opponent, AKEL Secretary-General Stefanos Stephanou, received 19 votes in the second round of the House Speaker vote.
His support came from AKEL’s 15 MPs and the four MPs of the ALMA – Citizens for Cyprus movement.
ELAM lawmakers abstained during the second-round vote.
First round results
In the opening round of the House Speaker vote, Demetriou secured 21 votes from DISY and Direct Democracy (17 from DISY and four from the movement).
Stephanou received 19 votes, including 15 from AKEL and four from ALMA.
DIKO president Nikolas Papadopoulos, who received the eight votes of his party, and ELAM president Christos Christou, who also secured eight votes from his party, failed to advance to the second round.
Parliament sworn in
The sitting began at around 4pm under the chairmanship of the oldest serving MP, Zacharias Koulias.
During the session, the 56 MPs and representatives of the religious groups formally took their oath before the election of the Speaker.
