Coastal erosion is causing serious concern in the coastal area of Dromolaxia–Meneou, particularly between Pervolia and Meneou, where significant loss of sandy beach has been recorded.
The erosion is now threatening seaside residences near Meneou, as well as the lower level of the coastal pedestrian path in Pervolia.
Dromolaxia–Meneou Mayor Kypros Andronikou has sounded the alarm, calling on state authorities to take immediate action.
Risk to infrastructure and public access
The mayor warned that delays caused by bureaucratic procedures could worsen the situation and lead to further damage along the coastal zone.
He said the erosion is steadily deteriorating conditions, affecting both public access to the sea and the functionality of coastal infrastructure.
According to the mayor, parts of the Pervolia promenade are at risk of collapse, with concrete blocks temporarily placed as a protective measure.
Calls for urgent state intervention
Andronikou said the issue has been repeatedly discussed with relevant government departments, but no substantial action has yet been taken.
He stressed that natural erosion cannot wait for administrative delays, urging authorities to proceed with urgent protective works.
He also noted that initial plans for breakwater construction were revised following a decision by the Department of Environment in favour of softer interventions.
Longstanding concerns over coastal management
Local authorities have raised concerns over past interventions along the coastline, including beach creation works and coastal protection structures that they say may have altered sediment balance in the area.
The mayor expressed frustration over delays in implementing updated measures, noting that studies were completed years ago but not promptly acted upon.
He added that protective works must be accelerated, with a concrete plan and approvals expected by autumn.
Warning of public accountability measures
The municipality warned that if timelines are not met, it will hold a public press conference to highlight the severity of the situation.
Officials stress that without immediate intervention, coastal erosion in Cyprus could lead to irreversible damage to the area’s environment, infrastructure and tourism value.
