21 hospitalised after mass food poisoning in Limassol

Date:

A food poisoning investigation is underway after reports of a suspected mass gastroenteritis outbreak linked to a wedding reception in Limassol.

The Health Services of the Ministry of Health were immediately mobilised following a complaint, according to Head of the Health Services Herodotos Herodotou.

The bride and groom reportedly informed authorities that around 50 guests developed symptoms of gastroenteritis.

Dozens of cases and hospitalisations recorded

Based on preliminary findings from interviews conducted by health officials, 39 cases were recorded in Limassol, with 15 people requiring hospital treatment.

In Paphos, 35 individuals reported symptoms, with three hospital admissions, while another three patients were hospitalised in Nicosia.

In total, 74 people have reported symptoms and 21 have required hospitalisation. Authorities said some cases presented more severe symptoms.

Three teams deployed for investigation

Health authorities have formed three separate teams to investigate the food poisoning incident in Limassol.

One team is conducting interviews with affected individuals, a second is inspecting catering and food service premises linked to the wedding reception, and a third is collecting food and water samples for laboratory analysis.

Due to the geographic spread of guests, the investigation has also been extended to Paphos, where additional interviews are taking place.

Catering company under scrutiny

Authorities have suspended operations at the suspected establishment pending the completion of investigations and laboratory results.

Officials are now awaiting laboratory analysis to determine whether a link exists between microorganisms found in patients and food consumed at the wedding reception, which was serviced by a catering company.

The investigation remains ongoing as health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
