Holguín visit may mark turning point in Cyprus talks, says Erhürman

Date:

The upcoming visit of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, on 8 June could represent a significant milestone in Cyprus peace talks, according to Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.

Speaking on a television programme, Erhürman said he was choosing his words carefully, adding that the coming period could prove to be a “hot summer” for developments in the Cyprus issue.

Expectations of renewed diplomatic activity

Erhürman said he expects increased diplomatic activity in the coming months, noting that UN Secretary-General António Guterres continues to show active interest in the Cyprus process.

However, he described the possibility of an immediate new comprehensive plan as unlikely, stressing a gradual approach to negotiations instead.

Comments on regional diplomacy

Referring to Cyprus’ engagement with the Organisation of Turkic States, Erhürman commented on President Nikos Christodoulides’s presence in Kazakhstan, saying he was not disappointed by recent developments.

He also criticised narratives suggesting that observer status in the organisation would automatically lead to political recognition.

Property commission remarks

Erhürman also addressed criticism of the so-called Immovable Property Commission, rejecting claims that it has lost its effectiveness as a legal remedy.

He said the mechanism remains within the framework of international law, but cannot replace a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

“Hot summer” expected in Cyprus issue

Erhürman concluded that while caution is necessary, there is a clear indication of renewed momentum, suggesting that Cyprus peace talks may enter a more active phase over the summer.
