Rainfall in May reaches 238% of normal levels

Exceptionally wet month across Cyprus

Cyprus recorded significantly above-average rainfall in May, with precipitation reaching 238% of the normal monthly level in the free areas, according to data released by the Meteorology Department.

The average rainfall for the month stood at 46.7 millimetres, marking a notably wetter period compared to seasonal norms.

All regions exceed seasonal averages

Meteorological stations across Cyprus reported rainfall levels above the monthly average, with some areas recording nearly four times the expected amount.

The highest percentage increases were recorded at:

  • Paphos Airport station: 394% of normal
  • Polis Chrysochous station: 375%
  • Stavros tis Psokas: 371%
  • New Limassol Port: 360%

These figures highlight widespread above-average precipitation across the island.

Highest and lowest rainfall readings

In absolute terms, the highest rainfall in May was recorded in Prodromos with 127.2 mm, followed by Saïttas with 108 mm and Stavros tis Psokas with 100.8 mm.

The lowest rainfall was recorded at Larnaca Airport, with 13.6 mm, although this still represented 143% of the monthly average for the station.

Above-average trend since October

From 1 October to date, total rainfall in the free areas has reached 117% of the seasonal norm, amounting to 569.4 mm.

All monitoring stations have exceeded 100% of their expected rainfall for the period, indicating a broadly wetter-than-average hydrological year so far.
