Man arrested after attacking police officers with knife and box cutter

Date:

A 29-year-old man was arrested on Friday by members of the Famagusta Police Division in connection with alleged offences including assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, making threats, and other related charges.

According to police, officers from the Xylofagou and Xylotymbou police stations went to a village in the Famagusta district at around 5:30 p.m. to locate the 29-year-old, who was the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to appear in court proceedings.

The suspect was found outside his residence carrying a knife and a box cutter. After being informed by officers of the reason for their presence, he allegedly refused to cooperate and threatened to attack them.

Despite repeated warnings from the police officers, the 29-year-old allegedly assaulted them, causing abrasions, mainly to their hands.

Although the suspect resisted arrest, officers were ultimately able to detain him both for the offences allegedly committed during the incident and under the outstanding court warrant.

The injured police officers were taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of Famagusta General Hospital, where they received first aid treatment before being discharged.
