International day of persons with disabilities

Date:

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was established in 1992 by a decision of the United Nations General Assembly and is observed annually on 3rd December.

This date was chosen to coincide with the adoption by the UN on 3rd December 1982 of the world programme of action concerning disabled persons, which led to the signing of the Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities on 30th March 2007. Cyprus ratified the Convention in 2011, followed by Greece in 2012.

This day provides an opportunity for governments, organisations, and societies to focus attention on the rights and capabilities of people with disabilities.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), approximately 15% of the global population—around 1 billion people—live with some form of disability. This represents the largest minority group globally, according to WHO data.
