Rain and storms forecast during Cyprus elections

Rain and thunderstorms are expected across Cyprus during today’s parliamentary elections, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Showers and possible hail expected

Initially, isolated showers are likely in western areas, while local rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop gradually, mainly in mountainous regions, inland areas and parts of the southeast.

Hail is also possible during thunderstorms.

An unstable air mass is affecting the region.

Partly cloudy conditions across island

Today’s weather will be partly cloudy, with isolated showers possible early in the west before local rain and thunderstorms develop later in the day.

Winds will blow from the southwest to northwest, initially light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, gradually becoming moderate and locally strong at 5 Beaufort.

The sea will be slightly rough to rough.

Temperatures are expected to reach:

  • around 27C inland and along the south and east coasts,
  • around 25C on the west and north coasts,
  • and 16C in the higher mountains.

Clearer skies expected overnight

Tonight, conditions will gradually become mostly clear, although periods of increased low cloud are expected.

During the early morning hours, patchy mist or fog may form locally.

Winds will gradually shift from southwesterly to northwesterly before becoming northwesterly to northeasterly, while southeastern winds are expected along the northern coast.

The sea will remain slightly rough.

Temperatures overnight are expected to fall to:

  • 15C inland,
  • around 17C on the coast,
  • and 7C in the higher mountains.

Unstable weather to continue

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather will remain partly cloudy at intervals, with isolated showers and thunderstorms expected mainly during the afternoon hours in inland and mountainous areas.

Temperatures are not expected to change significantly on Monday but will gradually rise on Tuesday and Wednesday, returning closer to seasonal averages.
