Cyprus weather turns unsettled – storms expected

Date:

Weak low pressure and an unstable air mass are affecting the region, bringing unsettled weather conditions to Cyprus with showers, thunderstorms and possible hail through the weekend.

Today will begin with locally increased low cloud, especially along coastal areas, as well as patches of light fog. Conditions will gradually become partly cloudy across the island.

By midday and into the afternoon, developing cloud formations are expected to bring isolated showers and thunderstorms, mainly over mountainous areas, northern regions and inland districts. Hail is also possible during thunderstorms.

Temperatures remain below seasonal averages

Winds will initially blow from the southeast to southwest at 3 to 4 Beaufort before gradually turning southwesterly to northwesterly by midday, strengthening to 4 to 5 Beaufort at times.

The sea will be generally slight to a little rough.

Temperatures are expected to reach around 29 °C inland, 25 °C along the southeast, east and northern coasts, 23 °C on western and southwestern coasts, and around 16 °C in the higher mountains.

Tonight, periods of increased low cloud will continue, while patchy fog or mist is expected to form later and during the early morning hours, particularly inland and in eastern areas.

Overnight temperatures will fall to around 14 °C inland, 16 °C along the coast and 8 °C in the higher mountains.

Weekend forecast points to more instability

On Saturday, conditions will remain mostly cloudy, with isolated showers initially affecting coastal areas. By midday and later in the day, local showers and thunderstorms are expected, especially over mountainous regions and the eastern half of the island, where weather phenomena could become more intense. Hail is also expected during thunderstorms.

Sunday and Monday will continue partly cloudy at intervals, with isolated morning showers possible mainly near the coast. During the afternoon hours, cloud development is expected to trigger local showers and isolated thunderstorms, particularly over mountainous, inland and eastern areas.

Temperatures are expected to drop on Saturday, especially inland and in mountainous districts, before remaining below normal seasonal averages through Monday.
