An unstable air mass and weak low pressure system are affecting the region, bringing an autumn-like Cyprus weather pattern with rain, thunderstorms and possible hail over the coming days.
Rain and thunderstorms expected today
According to the Department of Meteorology, periods of increased cloud cover are expected throughout the day. Initially, isolated showers may affect mainly western areas.
From midday onwards, developing clouds are forecast to bring local showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly in mountainous regions, the south, east and possibly inland areas. Hail is also possible during thunderstorms.
Winds will blow southwesterly to northwesterly, initially weak to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, gradually strengthening by the afternoon to moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort, with temporarily strong winds along the coast.
The sea will be slightly rough to rough, while southwestern coastal areas are expected to see rough conditions.
Temperatures will rise to around 28C inland, 27C along southeastern, eastern and northern coasts, 24C on western and southwestern coasts and around 19C in the higher mountains.
Fog and low cloud overnight
Tonight, increased low cloud is expected in several areas, particularly along the coast and later inland.
During the early morning hours, patchy mist and fog may form, mainly in eastern parts of the island.
Temperatures are expected to drop to around 14C inland, 16C along the coast and 8C in the higher mountains.
Unsettled conditions continue through weekend
On Friday, skies will remain partly cloudy at intervals, with isolated showers and thunderstorms expected mainly after midday in mountainous areas, inland regions and possibly northern districts. Hail remains possible during storms.
Saturday is expected to be mostly cloudy, with isolated showers initially affecting coastal areas. Later in the day, local showers and thunderstorms are forecast, especially in mountainous regions and the eastern half of the island, where conditions could become more intense.
On Sunday, the unsettled Cyprus weather pattern will continue, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms developing mainly after midday, particularly over mountains and eastern areas.
Temperatures to stay below seasonal averages
Temperatures on Friday are not expected to change significantly. However, a noticeable drop is forecast on Saturday, especially inland and in mountainous regions.
Conditions on Sunday are expected to remain at similar levels, keeping temperatures below average for this time of year.
