May rainfall at 163% of normal so far

Significantly above-average rainfall in May

Cyprus is experiencing unusually high rainfall levels for May, which have reached 163% of the seasonal norm up to Friday, 15 May, according to meteorological data.

The average rainfall across the free areas for the month so far stands at 31.9 millimetres, compared to the normal May average of 19.6 millimetres.

Some areas exceed triple the average

Several regions recorded exceptionally high precipitation levels, with some areas exceeding three times the monthly average.

The highest overperformance was recorded at Paphos Airport, reaching 385% of the normal level. Other notably high figures include:

  • Limassol New Port: 357%
  • Polis Chrysochous: 356%
  • Stavros tis Psokas: 340%

In absolute terms, the highest rainfall since the start of the month was recorded at Stavros tis Psokas with 92.4 mm, while the lowest was in Xylotymbou with just 7.1 mm.

Above-normal levels since October

From 1 October to date, overall rainfall across the free areas stands at 114% of the seasonal norm.

Total rainfall reached 555 mm compared with the long-term average of 453.2 mm.

All regions have now exceeded their seasonal averages except Lythrodontas, which remains slightly below at 97%.

Wetter-than-average season continues

The data indicates that Cyprus is currently experiencing a wetter-than-average hydrological year, with sustained rainfall contributing to above-normal cumulative levels across most regions.
