Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides is delivering a speech today before the Plenary Session of the Hellenic Parliament in Athens, following an official invitation from Parliament Speaker Nikos Voutsis.
The invitation was extended by the President of the Greek Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, who described the visit as a “historic moment” for both countries.
Strong symbolism in speech
The Presidency of the Republic and Kaklamanis have both highlighted the significance of the speech, calling it an event of particular importance for the Republic of Cyprus.
The invitation was initially extended during a meeting at the Presidential Palace in March, where Christodoulides accepted it, describing it as a great honour and a historic milestone.
At the time, the Presidency of the Republic also referred to the development as a significant moment for Cyprus, marking closer institutional ties between the two countries.
First such address in parliamentary history
According to statements by Kaklamanis, this is the first time in the history of the Greek Parliament that a President of the Republic of Cyprus has accepted an invitation to address the Plenary.
The speech is therefore seen as a symbolic act of strengthened parliamentary and diplomatic relations between Cyprus and Greece.
