Turkish torpedo boat harasses Greek vessel off Kos

Date:

Incident reported near Astypalaia and Kos

A Turkish naval vessel reportedly harassed the Greek ship Ocean Link while it was carrying out cable-laying operations in international waters between Astypalaia and Kos.

According to initial reports, the Turkish torpedo boat contacted the vessel by radio, claiming the ship was operating in an area under Turkish jurisdiction.

Greek frigate intervenes

The Greek frigate HS Adrias was deployed to the area and reportedly informed the Turkish vessel that the location was outside Turkish jurisdiction and fell within Greek responsibility.

The Turkish vessel later withdrew from the area, according to the reports.

Repeated tensions over maritime operations

The incident is said to be the third attempt to disrupt research and cable-laying activities linked to telecommunications and interconnection projects in the region.

Tensions between Greece and Turkey have repeatedly surfaced over maritime zones and offshore operations in the eastern Mediterranean.
