Christodoulides points to new UN initiative
President Nikos Christodoulides said major developments in the Cyprus talks could emerge before the end of 2026, revealing that UN Secretary-General António Guterres has launched a new initiative following talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Speaking to Alpha Cyprus, Christodoulides said he sees “developments ahead” because the UN chief has undertaken “a new initiative” which could potentially lead to “something very concrete” and require important decisions.
He did not rule out the possibility of a new settlement proposal, stating: “We may be close to developments that could lead to a solution plan.”
“The key is in Turkey”
The President stressed that “the key is in Turkey”, noting that the latest UN effort began after the meeting between Guterres and Erdoğan in Turkey.
“No one can dispute that the key lies in Turkey,” he said, adding that discussions are taking place away from the public spotlight.
Asked whether Ankara appeared more flexible, Christodoulides avoided giving a direct answer but repeated that the initiative began after the UN Secretary-General’s meeting with Erdoğan.
He also revealed that backchannel contacts are under way as part of the process, while clarifying that he has not personally met the Turkish President.
Cyprus remains committed to federation model
Christodoulides reiterated that the Greek Cypriot side remains committed to a bizonal bicommunal federation and rejects a two-state solution.
He also disclosed that the next enlarged informal conference is expected “within the summer” and described it as potentially decisive.
When asked whether a major conference on resolving the Cyprus issue could take place before Guterres leaves office at the end of the year, the President replied that this is “the goal of the UN Secretary-General”, adding that he fully shares and supports that objective.
EU role expected in renewed effort
The President said the guarantor powers are “certainly participating” in the effort, while the European Union is also seeking to play an important role.
On the possible appointment of a European envoy, Christodoulides revealed that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is considering specific names and is expected to make announcements soon.
He also referred to the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín, saying she is expected to arrive in Cyprus in early June as preparations continue.
