Man sleeping outside Larnaca court wants back in prison for safety

Date:

Man prefers prison over homelessness

A 39-year-old Iranian man, recognised as a political refugee in Cyprus, has spent a second consecutive night sleeping on the pavement outside the Larnaca Court after his recent release from prison.

The man reportedly told authorities he feels safer inside prison than living outside, and has expressed a wish to return to custody.

Police and welfare services intervene

The case has been brought to the attention of the Larnaca Police and the Social Welfare Services (SWS), which moved the man to the Larnaca Police Directorate for assessment and humanitarian support.

Authorities are examining the reasons behind his decision to remain outside despite being released.

History of psychological issues

According to police sources, the man has documented psychological problems and has been hospitalised at the Athalassa Psychiatric Hospital at least twice in the past.

He has also previously come into contact with authorities over incidents involving property damage.

Welfare response activated

Senior SWS officer Eftychios Hadjichristodoulou confirmed the man is a known case and is currently under assessment.

He said a welfare officer is on site to determine whether medical treatment or hospitalisation is required, and that accommodation and immediate financial assistance will be provided if needed.

Authorities added that a rehabilitation plan for released prisoners is already in place and will be applied in this case.

The situation highlights the challenges faced in supporting vulnerable individuals after release from custody.
