Environment Department steps in over Trozena, fines expected

Date:

Cyprus authorities are expected to notify the Limassol District Local Government Organisation to begin planning enforcement procedures linked to the Trozena project, following allegations that works started before permits were issued.

The development comes amid growing public reaction surrounding the proposed redevelopment of Trozena.

Environment Department launches inspections

The Department of Environment has now activated inspection procedures in the area after days of controversy over the project.

Officials from the department were reportedly on-site from Monday morning, while authorities are also examining possible environmental violations related to illegal land clearing.

According to reports, authorities do not rule out issuing out-of-court fines connected to the alleged breaches.

Ecological assessment finally published

Following criticism over the non-publication of the Special Ecological Assessment Study, the document was uploaded to the Environment Department’s website on Monday.

In a brief statement, the department confirmed that the assessment for the Trozena and Gerovasa redevelopment masterplan is currently under examination.

What the Trozena project includes

According to the environmental study, the Trozena project aims to revitalise the abandoned settlement through low-impact development focused on sustainability and cultural heritage preservation.

Planned developments include:

  • Renovation and reconstruction of traditional buildings
  • Eco-tourism accommodation units
  • A winery
  • Small dining and hospitality spaces
  • Wellness facilities
  • Parking areas
  • Camping areas

All proposed residential units are expected to be constructed within the traditional core of the village.

Focus on sustainable development

The project’s stated goal is to promote sustainable development while protecting the natural environment and preserving the area’s cultural identity.

Authorities continue examining both the environmental and planning aspects of the development.
