Leaders meet at UN buffer zone

A new round of Cyprus talks is taking place at 4 pm today, as President Nikos Christodoulides meets Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.

The meeting is hosted by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, and is being held in the UN-controlled buffer zone at Nicosia International Airport.

Discussions will take place behind closed doors, without media presence.

Follow-up to previous discussions

The meeting follows their previous encounter on 6 April, where both leaders held private talks and reiterated their support for the UN-led efforts on the Cyprus issue.

At the time, they reviewed progress on confidence-building measures and agreed to meet again with the aim of making more concrete announcements.

Confidence-building measures under review

After the last Cyprus talks meeting, President Christodoulides said progress had been made on specific confidence-building measures, with further developments expected in the current round of discussions.

Technical-level coordination has also continued in parallel. Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou met earlier this week with Turkish Cypriot representative Mehmet Dana.

UN continues facilitation role

The United Nations remains central in facilitating the Cyprus talks process, focusing on maintaining dialogue and advancing agreed confidence-building steps between the two sides.

Both leaders have previously expressed readiness to continue supporting UN efforts aimed at keeping the process active.
