What parties suggest for tackling corruption

Date:

The fight against corruption has become a central issue in the political debate in Cyprus, with parties presenting a series of proposals aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

As the election countdown continues, political forces outlined their positions in response to questions by SIGMA on how to address corruption more effectively across public institutions.

DISY calls for stronger oversight systems

The Democratic Rally (DISY) said its approach to the corruption fight in Cyprus focuses on institutional reform and stronger internal controls.

Party spokesperson Onoufrios Koullas highlighted the need to strengthen internal audit mechanisms across ministries and public services, alongside automated procedures for public procurement to enhance transparency and prevent abuse.

AKEL stresses political will and accountability

AKEL argued that laws already exist but lack proper enforcement, emphasising political will in the corruption fight in Cyprus.

Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas referred to past scandals, arguing that insufficient accountability has undermined public trust. He also called for renewed investigation into previously exposed cases, including surveillance-related allegations and governance issues linked to state structures.

DIKO proposes digital transparency platform

The Democratic Party (DIKO) proposed the creation of a digital platform titled “Follow The Money” as part of the corruption fight in the Cyprus strategy.

The platform would publish public contracts, project progress, and payment data to ensure full transparency in the management of public funds.

DIKO also suggested prioritising corruption-related court cases, introducing restrictions on appointments of former political figures to certain posts, and strengthening the Independent Authority Against Corruption.

ELAM focuses on prevention and education

ELAM said its approach to the corruption fight in Cyprus includes prevention through education and stronger control mechanisms.

Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos stressed the importance of instilling ethical values from a young age, while also calling for enhanced internal and external audit systems and faster judicial procedures in corruption cases.

EDEK and DIPA call for stricter penalties

EDEK proposed measures, including the publication of tax declarations of public officials and the removal of benefits in cases of conviction.

DIPA called for exemplary punishments, asset confiscation in cases of tax evasion, and improved judicial efficiency through digital tools to accelerate court procedures.

Greens highlight whistleblower protection

The Greens underlined their long-standing stance in the corruption fight in Cyprus, calling for stronger protection of whistleblowers and expanded powers for the Anti-Corruption Authority.

Party leader Stavros Papadouris also pointed to the need for anonymous complaints to be properly protected without exposure to risks.

ALMA demands institutional independence

ALMA proposed a series of reforms, including strengthening independent institutions, separating powers within the Attorney General’s office, and introducing transparent appointment procedures.

The party stressed that the corruption fight in Cyprus requires both institutional safeguards and individuals with integrity willing to challenge established systems.

Broader political consensus on reform

Despite differences in approach, most parties agree that strengthening institutions, improving transparency, and ensuring accountability are central pillars in the corruption fight in Cyprus as the country heads towards elections.
