Warning shots fired after migrant from occupied areas spotted near Central Prisons

Date:

A prison guard fired warning shots into the air last night at the Central Prisons after noticing a person moving towards the correctional facility.

According to Police, at around 21:35 on Wednesday night, a member of the Central Prisons staff who was on guard duty spotted a 23-year-old man moving suspiciously in the area and used his service weapon, firing warning shots.

Police officers went to the scene and, following enquiries, located the 23-year-old third-country national, who was found to be in the Republic illegally.

The 23-year-old said he wished to apply for political asylum and was transferred to the “Pournara” Reception Centre.
