Farmers protest on Friday – Mobilisations to last three days

Date:

Mobilisation set for Friday morning

Livestock farmers are preparing for a protest in Cyprus this Friday at 11:00, at the Rizoelia roundabout, according to Stella Petrou, spokesperson for the “Voice of Farmers” association.

Speaking on “Protoselido”, Petrou said the location was chosen to allow participation from farmers across Cyprus while ensuring direct interaction with the public.

“We will allow people to pass, see us, and we will hand out informational leaflets,” she noted.

Participation grows as pressure mounts

Petrou said the farmers protest began three weeks ago with limited turnout but has since grown into a mass mobilisation.

“We have united significantly and are now proceeding with more dynamic and decisive measures,” she stressed, adding that the initiative is not linked to political parties or organised groups.

No talks with government during protest

The association does not intend to engage with government officials during the protest. Petrou said requests for a meeting with the President of the Republic were submitted three times but were not accepted.

She added that previous contacts with competent authorities failed to provide answers to key issues.

Key demands: milk quotas and compensation

At the centre of the farmers protest are demands regarding milk quotas and compensation for livestock breeders.

“When clear answers are given, we will assess our next steps,” Petrou said.

Protest may last several days

Regarding the duration, organisers aim to remain at the site for at least three days, leaving open the possibility of escalation.

“This time we are not leaving. We will speak,” Petrou stated.

She also raised concerns about the broader impact on the sector and the economy, calling for public support.

“The problem concerns everyone. Cyprus’s economy is affected,” she said.
