United States midterm elections: The crucial battle that will determine Donald Trump’s term

Date:

Six months remain until the United States midterm elections, a contest expected to largely determine the course of Donald Trump’s second presidential term. After two years of deep political and social changes, Americans will decide who controls Congress and, by extension, the president’s ability to implement his agenda.

“The stakes are very high,” said Mindy Romero, director of the Center for Inclusive Democracy at the University of Southern California, describing the elections as a “critical moment” for both parties.

Battle for control of Congress

For Democrats, the goal is not just to regain control of Congress. As Romero explains, they view Trump and Republican officials as an “existential threat” to the country.

On the Republican side, the 79-year-old president aims to maintain majorities in both chambers to continue implementing his legislative agenda without obstacles.

Otherwise, as Trump has warned, Democrats could initiate impeachment proceedings. A Democratic-controlled Congress could also block appointments, launch investigations, and halt key aspects of his policies.

The November elections will decide all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 33 of the 100 Senate seats. Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers, while Democrats hope to at least retake the House.

Voter dissatisfaction and the Trump factor

Traditionally, midterm elections do not favor the party holding the White House. Six months before the vote, prospects for Republicans appear challenging, as polls show growing dissatisfaction with Trump.

“The president is quite unpopular, and that usually signals poor performance for the ruling party in midterms,” said Julia Azari of Marquette University.

Many Americans believe Trump has failed to improve their economic situation, despite campaign promises. At the same time, the war with Iran has proven unpopular, while rising fuel prices have further worsened public sentiment.

Democrats also accuse him of authoritarian tendencies, while part of the public criticizes his strict immigration policies.

Weak enthusiasm for Democrats

Despite Trump’s declining approval, polls do not show strong enthusiasm for the opposition.

“Americans are dissatisfied with both the direction of the country and both parties,” Azari noted.

Still, many voters may turn to Democrats as an alternative, even if they remain skeptical.

Redistricting and political uncertainty

A key issue in the campaign is redistricting, a practice both parties use to strengthen their positions.

In 2025, Trump urged Republican-led states to redraw districts to limit Democratic influence—a strategy that proved effective in states like Texas and North Carolina. Democrats responded with similar moves in states such as California and Virginia.

At the same time, a recent Supreme Court ruling limiting districting in favor of minorities has further reshaped the political landscape, prompting new redistricting plans in states like Louisiana and Alabama.

A highly uncertain race

All these factors contribute to political volatility and what Azari calls “electoral chaos.”

Romero described the situation as “a moving chessboard in the back of a truck on a rough country road,” capturing the uncertainty just months before the vote.
