A 46-year-old motorcycle driver was found to be without a driving license, and tested positive for alcohol as well as in a preliminary drug test, after being involved in a road collision with a moped ridden by a 45-year-old woman yesterday afternoon in the Larnaca district.
The collision occurred around 5:00 p.m. on Limassol Avenue in Aradippou. The 46-year-old was riding his motorcycle and, upon reaching the camera-controlled junction with Makarios Avenue and Nikiforou Foka, under circumstances still under investigation, collided with the moped driven by the 45-year-old woman.
Police officers attended the scene for examinations, while both the 46-year-old and the 45-year-old—who were wearing protective helmets—were transported by ambulance to Larnaca General Hospital. Medical examinations showed that the 45-year-old sustained injuries to her left arm and was kept in hospital for treatment, though her condition is not life-threatening. The 46-year-old was discharged, as he does not appear to have suffered any serious injuries.
As part of the investigation, both drivers were subjected to alcohol tests. The 46-year-old’s breathalyzer reading was 59 μg%ml, compared to the legal limit of 9 μg%ml, while the 45-year-old’s result was zero. At the same time, the 46-year-old tested positive in a preliminary drug test, and samples were taken for a final laboratory analysis.
Police investigations also found that the 46-year-old was driving without a license and without valid insurance. Additionally, the motorcycle had been declared immobilized with the Department of Road Transport and did not have a valid roadworthiness certificate.
For investigation purposes, a court arrest warrant was issued against the 46-year-old, under which he was arrested around 11:00 p.m. and taken into custody.
The Larnaca Traffic Department continues its investigations.
