United Arab Emirates to quit oil cartel OPEC

Date:

The United Arab Emirates has confirmed its exit after nearly 60 years in the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and the wider OPEC+ alliance. The government says the decision reflects its long-term economic strategy and a shift in its energy priorities.

Officials stress that the move supports greater flexibility in how the country manages its oil production.

The exit marks a major change for global oil markets, as the country plays a key role in global supply.

Analysts say the decision could weaken coordination within the group, which relies on shared production targets to influence prices.

The UAE joined OPEC in 1967 and became one of its most important and consistent producers.

More flexibility in production policy

UAE officials say the exit gives the country more control over its oil strategy. The state can now adjust production without OPEC quota limits and respond faster to global demand changes.

The exit reflects a broader effort to adapt to shifting energy markets and diversify policy options.

Pressure on OPEC structure

After the exit, the organisation will continue with 11 members, with Saudi Arabia still leading the group.

OPEC aims to coordinate production among members, but internal differences have grown in recent years.

The UAE decision raises questions about how strongly the group can maintain unity in the future.

Energy strategy and outlook

The UAE says it will continue to support stable global energy markets while operating outside OPEC.

Officials link the move to efforts to modernise energy policy and respond more quickly to market shifts.

The exit comes during a period of volatility in global energy markets, driven by supply pressures and geopolitical tensions.
