Russian superyacht passes Strait of Hormuz despite blockade

Date:

A 142-metre superyacht linked to a sanctioned Russian billionaire has sailed through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital waterway affected by ongoing regional tensions and restrictions.

The vessel, named Nord, is linked to Russian businessman Alexei Mordashov, who has been sanctioned by Western governments. The yacht reportedly travelled from Dubai to Muscat over the weekend.

Despite the heightened security situation, it was one of the few private vessels to transit the Strait of Hormuz in recent months.

Links to sanctioned Russian billionaire

The Nord is associated with Alexei Mordashov, one of Russia’s wealthiest individuals and a close ally of President Vladimir Putin. Although he is not officially listed as the yacht’s owner, records indicate it was registered to a company linked to his family.

Mordashov has an estimated net worth of around $37 billion and built his fortune through the steel and mining company Severstal.

He has been sanctioned by the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Sanctions and shifting yacht movements

Western sanctions have led to the seizure or restriction of several Russian-owned luxury vessels in Europe.

In previous cases, yachts linked to sanctioned individuals have been detained or blocked from entering ports, prompting many vessels to relocate to jurisdictions considered less restrictive, including parts of the Middle East and Asia.

The Nord, valued at more than $500 million, features luxury facilities including a swimming pool, submarine and helipad, according to maritime profiles.

Strategic waterway under pressure

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important shipping routes, with around one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies typically passing through it.

However, maritime traffic has been significantly reduced amid escalating tensions in the region. Iran has previously restricted shipping through the strait in response to military strikes involving the United States and Israel, while also warning vessels approaching the area.

It remains unclear whether the yacht received official permission from Iranian authorities to pass through the route.

Regional diplomacy and rising tensions

The transit comes as Iran continues high-level diplomatic discussions with Russia, reinforcing strategic ties between the two countries.

Talks in St Petersburg between Iranian officials and Russian leadership this week highlighted closer cooperation amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

At the same time, maritime activity in the region remains heavily affected, with shipping levels in the Gulf significantly below pre-conflict norms and oil prices experiencing sharp fluctuations.
