Iran proposal sparks dissatisfaction from Trump

Date:

Trump unhappy with Tehran’s plan

US President Donald Trump is reportedly dissatisfied with a proposal from Iran aimed at ending the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel.

According to reports in the The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, the proposal was submitted by Tehran via Pakistan as part of efforts to halt the war that began on February 28.

Concerns over Iran’s intentions

While Trump has not fully rejected the proposal, he has raised serious concerns about Iran’s sincerity and whether it is acting in good faith, citing sources within his administration.

The dissatisfaction appears to stem from key elements of the Iranian plan, which reportedly includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reaching an agreement to end the war without making the completion of nuclear negotiations a strict precondition.

Nuclear talks not a priority in proposal

Under the proposal, discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear programme would begin but would not be required to conclude before a final agreement is reached- an aspect that has reportedly caused unease within the US administration.

An unnamed US official told Reuters that this specific point is central to the president’s dissatisfaction.

White House response remains cautious

Responding to the reports, White House spokesperson Olivia Wales declined to comment in detail, stating that “we will not negotiate through the press” and that the opposing side is aware of “our red lines.”
