Contract signed for major transport hub
The construction of a bus station in Larnaca has officially moved ahead following the signing of a €6.387 million contract, excluding VAT, by the Department of Public Works under the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.
The project is considered a key infrastructure development aimed at upgrading public transport services and promoting sustainable urban mobility in the Larnaca district.
Strategic planning through sustainable mobility study
The decision to proceed with the bus station in Larnaca emerged from the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for Larnaca. The selected option prioritises upgraded public transport systems, with the central bus station forming a core component.
The facility will be located on state land in the Larnaca marina area, ensuring adequate space for development, improved traffic flow, and integration with wider urban projects.
Modern transport hub design
The bus station is designed as a modern interchange hub serving urban, intercity and regional routes, as well as direct connections to Larnaca International Airport.
The project aims to reduce dependence on private vehicles and support national and EU sustainable mobility targets.
The contract includes the design, construction and maintenance of the station, along with improvements to a section of Faliro Street to support bus traffic.
The project is divided into two main parts:
Road infrastructure works:
- Widening of Faliro Street over approximately 108 metres
- Two traffic lanes (one per direction)
- Pedestrian pavements on both sides
- Improved access for buses entering and exiting the station
Station facilities:
- Ticket offices, offices and waiting areas
- Cafeteria and sanitary facilities
- Staff rest areas
- A 3,100m² metal canopy covering the facilities
- Bus stands, parking areas for buses, taxis and staff
- Dedicated space for maintenance and accessible parking
Timeline and funding
The project was awarded through an open tender process, with construction expected to begin in mid-May 2026.
It is co-financed under the EU Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA 2021–2027,” contributing to Cyprus’ broader infrastructure and transport modernisation strategy.
Officials say the new bus station in Larnaca will improve daily commuting, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance overall quality of life by strengthening public transport connectivity across the region.
