A 24-year-old man is in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital following a workplace accident in Nicosia involving a fall from a garbage truck during waste collection duties.
The incident occurred last Thursday, April 23, 2026, on Austria Street towards Caucasus Street in the Strovolos area.
Investigation into cause of incident
Authorities are currently investigating whether the case should be classified as a road traffic accident, a workplace accident, or both. The probe is being conducted jointly by the Nicosia Traffic Police and the Department of Labour Inspection.
Police have begun taking statements from the driver of the garbage truck and a second worker who was on duty with the injured 24-year-old at the time of the incident.
Investigators are also seeking witness accounts from passers-by and reviewing closed-circuit camera footage from the area.
Officials have stated that the exact circumstances surrounding the accident remain under examination, with no final conclusions reached at this stage.
The case has raised renewed attention on occupational safety in municipal waste collection operations.
