EAC employees declare 24-hour strike

Date:

A nationwide 24-hour strike has begun today in Cyprus, as employees of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) participate.

The EAC strike in Cyprus began at midnight on 22 April and is set to continue until midnight tonight, according to the unions involved.

EAC stated that critical infrastructure and services affecting consumers are not expected to be disrupted.

A safety staffing plan has been activated to ensure the uninterrupted supply of electricity across Cyprus during the EAC strike.

As part of the strike, customer service centres and EAC offices across the island are closed for the duration of the industrial action.

However, customers can still pay bills electronically via the EAC website, mobile app, banking platforms or post offices. Despite the industrial action, essential services remain accessible through digital channels. Applications for new connections, disconnections and account transfers can also be submitted via email.

Talks with Energy Ministry

The strike follows a meeting between trade unions and Energy Minister Michalis Damianos on Tuesday, during which issues related to energy policy, electricity costs and supply adequacy were discussed.

Union representatives have warned that further escalation of measures cannot be ruled out if concerns are not addressed.

The strike in Cyprus highlights ongoing tensions over energy costs and infrastructure planning, with unions and authorities continuing discussions on sector challenges.
