Attack on “Epaminondas” ship in Oman waters

A Liberia-flagged, Greek-owned container ship named “Epaminondas” has reportedly been attacked in waters northeast of Oman, amid heightened tensions affecting maritime security in the region.

According to maritime security sources, the vessel is managed by Maersk and monitored by the security firm Diaplous. It was sailing from Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates to Mudra, India, when the incident occurred.

The “Epaminondas” ship attack took place in an area where shipping routes remain highly vulnerable due to ongoing regional instability.

Details of the attack

Reports indicate the vessel was approached by a vessel linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) without prior radio communication, before coming under fire.

Iranian media, citing Tasnim, claimed the ship had ignored repeated warnings issued by Iranian forces.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) stated that the container ship reported being approached by an IRGC gunboat, which subsequently opened fire, causing significant damage to the bridge.

No fire or environmental damage was reported, and all crew members were confirmed safe.

Second vessel targeted in Strait of Hormuz

In a separate incident, a second ship was also fired upon in the Strait of Hormuz earlier the same day, according to the British military.

UKMTO said an outbound cargo vessel reported being hit eight nautical miles west of Iran. The ship later stopped at sea, but all crew members remained safe.

The agency warned of heightened maritime activity in the region and urged vessels to report any suspicious movements.

The “Epaminondas” ship attack and related incidents highlight growing risks to commercial shipping in one of the world’s most strategic waterways.
