Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has warned that foreign military forces deployed in Cyprus due to tensions linked to Iran must not become permanent.
According to Turkish media reports, Erdoğan made the comments during a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman at the Dolmabahçe working office in Istanbul.
Focus on regional developments
Discussions reportedly covered bilateral relations and wider regional developments, including security dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Erdoğan stressed that any military presence on the island linked to current regional tensions should remain temporary and not evolve into a long-term deployment.
Turkey’s position on Cyprus
The Turkish president reiterated that Turkey is ready to take all necessary steps to protect Turkish Cypriots and will not allow what he described as the undermining of their rights and interests.
He also reaffirmed Ankara’s longstanding position on the Cyprus issue amid ongoing regional geopolitical tensions.
High-level participation in talks
The meeting was attended by senior Turkish officials, including the head of the National Intelligence Organization İbrahim Kalın, Presidential Communications Director Burhanettin Duran, and other foreign policy and security advisers.
