Turkish Cypriot leader stresses security and stability

Turkish Cypriot “prime minister” Ünal Üstel said authorities will take all necessary measures whenever issues relate to what he called “sovereign rights”, stressing that maintaining peace and stability in the region remains a top priority.

In a statement on recent developments, the Üstel highlighted ongoing monitoring of the situation by Turkish Cypriot security forces.

Claims over regional developments

Ünal Üstel said the area in question falls within what he described as “their borders”, adding that local communities continue agricultural and livestock activities there.

He claimed that, under the pretext of a foot-and-mouth outbreak on the Greek Cypriot side, Greek Cypriot authorities attempted to facilitate “illegal crossings”, prompting immediate preventive action by security forces.

Coordination with UN peacekeepers

The Turkish Cypriot “prime minister” said the situation was brought under control following coordinated actions by security units and contacts with the UNFICYP.

He added that measures in the area were later eased in a controlled manner after what he described as assurances provided through these discussions.

No incidents reported

Ünal Üstel said no incidents or military confrontations occurred due to what he described as the “prudent approach and effective coordination” of security forces.

He reiterated that the Turkish Cypriot administration will continue to protect its “borders”, “sovereign rights” and the safety of its citizens.

He concluded that authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely and take all necessary measures with the same determination to ensure peace and security in the region.
