Leopard tanks deal close between Greece and Cyprus

Date:

Advanced talks for tank transfer

The Leopard tanks deal between Greece and Cyprus is at an advanced stage, with discussions focusing on the immediate transfer of LEOPARD 1 A5 battle tanks to meet urgent operational needs of the National Guard.

Talks are ongoing between the Greek Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Cyprus, with sources indicating positive progress at both political and military levels.

High-level coordination underway

Coordination is being handled by the leadership of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff and the Cyprus National Guard General Staff.

Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Dimitrios Choupis, is reportedly maintaining open communication channels with National Guard Chief Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou.

Operational need drives decision

The push for reinforcing armoured capabilities stems largely from ongoing difficulties in maintaining Russian-made T-80 tanks currently in service.

Efforts to secure Israeli MERKAVA tanks did not progress, mainly due to long delivery timelines, particularly amid developments in the Middle East.

Leopard tanks seen as immediate solution

Under these conditions, the Leopard tanks deal is viewed as the most immediate and realistic option. The tanks are expected to undergo upgrades to become fully operational, including modern targeting systems, enhanced armour, and improved communication, command, and control systems.

Political backing and alternative options

Developments are being closely monitored at the political level by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Defence Minister Nikos Dendias. According to reports, actions taken so far have already contributed to strengthening the combat readiness of the Hellenic Force in Cyprus.

At the same time, the National Guard continues to explore alternative procurement options from European countries such as Germany and France, while the Israeli option remains under consideration despite delays linked to defence production constraints.

Current armoured strength

The National Guard currently operates two medium tank battalions, with a total of 82 T-80 tanks under the 20th Armoured Brigade.
