Christodoulides outlines next steps

Cyprus will proceed based on a specific plan regarding the British Bases Cyprus issue once the current situation stabilises, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday.

Speaking from Ayia Napa Marina, the President noted that preparations are already underway, even before his earlier public statements on the matter.

“I have said from the beginning that when this situation is completed, we will move forward based on a specific plan and strategy, the groundwork for which had already begun,” he said.

EU support highlighted

Asked whether Cyprus would have European Union backing on the British Bases issue, Christodoulides pointed to conclusions from the latest European Council.

“The EU clearly records in its conclusions that it acknowledges the intention of the Republic of Cyprus, and I consider this reference to be of particular added value,” he said.

Context of ongoing preparations

The President’s remarks were made during his visit to Ayia Napa Marina, where preparations are underway for the informal summit of EU heads of state or government scheduled for April 23–24 in Cyprus.

The British Bases in Cyprus issue remains a longstanding point of discussion, particularly in light of recent statements by the UK Ministry of Defence indicating that the status of the bases is not open to negotiation.

Christodoulides reiterated that Cyprus will move forward in a structured and strategic manner once current developments allow.
