Consumer group flags lack of oversight
Concerns over fuel price transparency in Cyprus have been raised by the President of the Consumers Association and Quality of Life, Loukas Aristodemou.
Speaking on state radio, Aristodemou questioned how fuel prices are being determined, stressing that the final price consumers see is only the outcome of a broader process that lacks sufficient scrutiny.
He pointed to what he described as an absence of effective monitoring and transparency in the market.
Price hikes after Akrotiri incident
According to Aristodemou, fuel price increases began immediately after the drone-related incident in Akrotiri.
He said consumers reported sharp increases, with many sharing photographic evidence from petrol stations showing rising prices from one day to the next.
Profiteering concerns highlighted
Aristodemou described the situation as profiteering, noting that the issue has also been acknowledged by Nikos Christodoulides during the announcement of support measures.
He added that the association has called on the government to criminalise profiteering, with a clear legal definition outlining when and under what conditions it occurs.
Calls for transparency and accountability
The association is also urging authorities to introduce regular publication of data detailing how fuel prices are formed.
Aristodemou stressed that greater transparency in fuel price would help ensure accountability and protect consumers from unjustified increases.
Questions over LPG price surge
Referring specifically to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), he questioned recent price hikes, noting a sharp jump from €18 to €25 without explanation.
He said no clear justification had been provided for the increase, raising further concerns about how pricing decisions are made.
