Can a crisis shift the balance of the political landscape? The drone that crashed in the British Bases shortly after midnight on Sunday, March 1–2, brought a sense of concern and fear. However, those feelings began to change by Monday afternoon with the arrival of four Greek F-16 fighter jets and the announcement of the deployment of two Greek frigates.
This was followed by France’s reaction and a trilateral meeting between Nikos Christodoulides, Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Emmanuel Macron at the “Andreas Papandreou” air base in Paphos. The rest is more or less well known and widely discussed.
Does this constitute a message of security as the culmination of the government’s foreign policy, or an overambitious display sending the wrong signals abroad, potentially harming tourism and, by extension, the economy?
A recent poll by RAI Consultants, presented by Alpha TV, highlights a key development regarding the image of the government and the President of the Republic, recording the most positive results in quite some time. During a period marked by two ongoing crises — the geopolitical situation and the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak — President Nikos Christodoulides managed to improve his approval ratings.
This appears closely linked to the support Cyprus received, primarily from Greece but also from other EU member states. The air defense shield established around Cyprus seems to have had a positive impact on the government, serving as a measurable return on its foreign policy.
