Fire Service responds to emergency

The Fire Service carried out the successful rescue of 31 hikers trapped in Avakas Gorge on Wednesday, following a sudden rise in water levels.

Initial rescue operation

At 13:13, authorities received a call for 26 individuals stranded in the gorge while hiking. Firefighters from the Pegeia Rural Fire Station responded promptly, using rescue ropes and life jackets to transport the hikers to safety. All rescued individuals were reported in good health.

Second incident

Later in the afternoon, at 16:20, the Fire Service was called to assist five more hikers trapped in a different section of Avakas Gorge. Three hikers were rescued using ropes and life jackets, while the remaining two exited the gorge independently. All individuals were confirmed safe and unharmed.

Safety reminder

Authorities remind visitors to exercise caution when hiking in areas prone to sudden water level changes, especially during rainy or wet conditions.
