Case background

The trial of five suspects linked to the violent incidents in Larnaca on 17 January, including clashes and gunfire, was postponed by the Larnaca Assize Court on Monday. The defendants appeared under heavy security measures.

Reason for postponement

Defense lawyers requested additional time to study the evidence, which the court approved. The new trial date has been set for 6 April at 9:00 a.m. The five suspects remain in custody.

The suspects are aged 20, 26, 26, 32, and 48 years. Four are recognised political refugees from Jordan and Palestine, while the 48-year-old holds Cypriot citizenship. Three more individuals, aged 26, 27, and 35, are still being sought in connection with the case.

Charges

The defendants face multiple charges including conspiracy to commit a felony, illegal possession and transportation of firearms, possession of explosives, extortion, threats to property, participation in a criminal organisation, and assault causing actual bodily harm.

Two of the suspects, aged 48 and 26, face additional charges related to the assault of a 39-year-old European citizen in Pyla at 4:00 a.m. on 17 January. They are also charged with causing grievous bodily harm, actual bodily harm, threats, and carrying a knife.
