Missiles intercepted over Saudi Arabia
A Greek Patriot system deployed in Saudi Arabia intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched from Iran, according to Greek officials.
The interception took place early in the morning after an alert was issued over an incoming threat, prompting the activation of the Greek air defence unit stationed in the kingdom.
Successful response by Greek unit
According to Greece’s military command (GEETHA), two interceptor missiles were launched, successfully neutralising both targets in line with operational protocols.
The Greek Patriot system demonstrated rapid response capability, with both incoming missiles intercepted before reaching their intended targets.
Oil facilities believed to be target
Defence Minister Nikos Dendias said the Iranian missiles were heading towards Saudi oil refineries, underlining the wider implications for global energy markets.
He noted that protecting critical infrastructure is essential, particularly at a time of rising oil prices and global inflationary pressure.
Part of wider air defence network
The Greek unit is stationed in Saudi Arabia as part of an international Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD) initiative supporting the kingdom’s air defence systems.
The deployment of the Greek Patriot system forms part of broader efforts to shield key infrastructure from regional threats.
